Completion of Lawn Edging and Trellis

25th April 2005

A bit further on and the edging and side bed are completed. There are still tasks like lawn tidying, by filling edges between paving and lawn, and replacing the patch with turfs new or using turfs taken up from other parts of the lawn in creating the side bed.

These photos were taken 25th April 2005 after the final weekend of working on the bricking and bed infill..

Left hand edge complete, bed filled with layers of compost/soil mix, landscape sheeting, bark chip mulch.

Between the compost and landscape sheeting two pipes have been laid for easier irrigation, a soaker hose for the bed, and a tee'd-off hose to attach smaller hose for other watering tasks. These have been laid out underneathe the landscape sheeting to achieve best soaker hose irrigation when needed and the hose for easier maintenance whilst reducing problems from trailing hoses.

Closer view of the bottom end of the left hand side, showing one of the hose tees attached to the trellis (th automatic stop end), the edging and bark chip mulch.

The turfs on the left are the ones dug up to accommodate the side bed and will be used later for lawn patch replacement.

Patch of earth with seed starting to grow, but heavily 'turned over' by the local cats, including Lucien (aka "your bloody cat").

The potato barrels can be seen on the upper patio, gradually filling up and growing well.

Follow on tasks are now returf sections and holes in the lawn, using old turfs first. We are experimenting with large seed trays with grass seed to create our own small turfs for patch repairs, grown under fleece to reduce cat problems.

Next task will be to use the bricks taken up from the old lawn edging, cleaned off to make a raised bed behind the front wall of the front 'garden' area, with raised platforms for some pots and water butts, filled with compost from our own compost heap and reusing as many materials as possible.

Our first task though, is currently treating the trellis as the side bed has just been finished in time as the clematis plants have arrived and need planting.

More details and photos when we rememember, have time and weather conditions permit...
